I'm grateful for that and have a special place in my heart for that time." "I had a great time growing up there in a super diverse area and have no bad memories. His family moved to Pennsylvania soon after.

I could read music from learning the violin and I caught on with the rhythm of it." "When I was in fifth grade the band director needed a percussionist. "My mom played violin and I started playing at a very young age," he said. Van Ellis has fond memories of his early childhood in Ewing, just north of Trenton. The house in Doylestown, Pa., that served as the band's longtime home base was sold as they began working on "Light We Made." After exhausting all options the group moved operations to Tullytown, Pa., across the Delaware River from New Jersey.
BALANCE AND COMPOSURE BREAK UP FULL
"There's more thought involved because there are more options that you can't do on a full drum kit," he says.įinding a new rehearsal space in which to write and rehearse "Light We Made" posed another challenge for Balance and Composure. Van Ellis says creating drum rhythms and beats through technology is more complex than simply triggering samples. On "Midnight Zone," there are eight different snare sounds layered on top of the live drums. The band retains its knack for strong melodies on tracks like "Spinning," the lilting "Mediocre Love" and the propulsive "Call It Losing Touch." The album also includes electronic drums. The new record still sounds like us but it's more subdued." I still listen to a lot of rock music but at the same time I listen to an equal amount of hip-hop and electronic music and jazz, and there are those elements in there. "We wanted to see how weird we could get without sounding like a dance band," he says.
BALANCE AND COMPOSURE BREAK UP HOW TO
"When you're playing the same stuff over and over every night on tour you start to wonder how to make those same notes happen but make them sound different. "Our new album stems from curiosity and being interested in learning how to create sounds in different ways," says Van Ellis. The album features hypnotic guitar patterns, synthesizers and other electronic effects not heard on their more aggressive debut and sophomore efforts, "Separation" (2011) and "The Things We Think We're Missing" (2013).

Van Ellis says Balance and Composure approached "Light We Made" as a challenge to explore new ways to create and interpret music. Ripper Owens from tribute band to lead singer to solo star Kurt Baker Combo brings punchy power-pop to North Jersey "A sense that we didn't have to go and write an album that would be something that people were expecting us to write. "From a music sense the accident kind of gave everyone some sense of being carefree and taking our time," he said. The band took a three-year break from recording, and after recovering physically and mentally from the van crash, took a new philosophy on writing and recording, Van Ellis said. The group's latest album, "Light We Made," was released last October. Balance and Composure performs on April 22 and 23 at WFMU-FM's Monty Hall in Jersey City.
